What Laser Technologies are Required to Build "OOCL PORTUGAL"?

During the construction of "OOCL PORTUGAL," high-power laser technology was crucial in cutting and welding the ship's large and thick steel materials. The maiden sea trial of "OOCL PORTUGAL" is not only a significant milestone for China's shipbuilding industry but also a strong testament to the hard power of Chinese laser technology.

On August 30, 2024, the highly anticipated ultra-large container ship, "OOCL PORTUGAL," set sail from the Yangtze River in Chinese Jiangsu Province for its trial voyage. This giant vessel, independently developed and built by China, is renowned for its massive size, measuring 399.99 meters in length, 61.30 meters in width, and 33.20 meters in depth. The deck area is comparable to 3.2 standard football fields. With a carrying capacity of 220,000 tons, when fully loaded, its freight capacity is equivalent to over 240 train carriages.

What advanced technologies are required to build such a massive ship?

During the construction of "OOCL PORTUGAL", high-power laser technology was crucial in cutting and welding the ship's large and thick steel materials.

Laser Cutting Technology

By rapidly heating materials with a high-energy laser beam, precise cuts can be made. In shipbuilding, this technology is commonly used to cut thick steel plates and other heavy materials. Its advantages include fast cutting speed, high precision, and minimal heat-affected zones. For a large vessel like "OOCL PORTUGAL," laser cutting technology may have been used to process the ship's structural components, deck, and cabin panels.

Laser Welding Technology

Laser welding involves focusing a laser beam to quickly melt and join materials, offering high weld quality, small heat-affected zones, and minimal distortion. In shipbuilding and repairs, laser welding can be used to weld the ship's structural components, improving welding efficiency and quality. For "OOCL PORTUGAL," laser welding technology may have been applied to weld key parts of the hull, ensuring the ship's structural strength and safety.

TEYU laser chillers can provide stable cooling for fiber laser equipment with up to 160,000 watts of power, keeping pace with market developments and offering reliable temperature control support for high-power laser devices.
