Laser peening, also known as laser shock peening, is a surface engineering and modification process that uses a high-energy laser beam to apply beneficial residual compressive stresses to the surface and near-surface regions of metal components. This process increases the materials’ resistance to surface-related failures such as fatigue and fretting fatigue, by delaying the initiation and propagation of cracks through the generation of deeper and larger residual compressive stresses. Think of it as a blacksmith wielding a hammer to forge a sword, with laser peening being the technician's hammer. The process of laser shock peening on the surface of metal parts is similar to the hammering process used in swordmaking. The surface of the metal parts is compressed, resulting in a denser surface layer of atoms.
