1. Check The Production Date
Before purchasing, check the production date on the glass CO2 laser tube label, which should be as close to the current date as possible, although a difference of 6-8 weeks is not uncommon.
2. Fit An Ammeter
It is recommended that you have an ammeter fitted to your laser device. This will allow you to make sure you're not overdriving your CO2 laser tube beyond the manufacturer's recommended maximum operating current, as this will prematurely age your tube and shorten its lifespan.
3. Equip A Cooling System
Do not operate a glass CO2 laser tube without sufficient cooling. A laser device requires to be equipped with a water chiller to control the temperature. It is important to monitor the temperature of the cooling water, ensuring that it remains within the range of 25℃-30℃, never too high or too low. Your CO2 laser tubes lose about 9 - 13% of their laser capacity through the lens and mirror. When they are dirty this can increase significantly, the additional power loss at the work surface will mean you either need to lower the working speed or increase the laser power. It is crucial to avoid the scale in the CO2 laser cooling tube while using it, as this can cause blockages in the cooling water and impede heat dissipation. 20% hydrochloric acid dilution can be used to eliminate the scale and keep the CO2 laser tube clean.
5. Regularly Monitor Your Tubes
Laser tubes’ power output will gradually decrease with time. Purchase a power meter and regularly check the power directly out of the CO2 laser tube. Once it hits around 65% of the rated power (the actual percentage depends on your application and throughput), it’s time to start planning for a replacement.
6. Mind Its Fragility, Handle With Care
Glass CO2 laser tubes are made of glass and are fragile. When installing and using, avoid partial force.
