Properly shutting down an industrial chiller for an extended period is essential to protect the equipment and ensure smooth operation when it is restarted. Follow these steps to safeguard your chiller during a long vacation.

Steps for Preparing an Industrial Chiller for Long-Term Shutdown

1)Drain the Cooling Water: Before turning off the industrial chiller, drain all cooling water from the unit through the drainage outlet. If you plan to reuse the antifreeze after the break, collect it in a clean container for cost-saving reuse.

2)Dry the Pipelines: Use a compressed air gun to thoroughly dry the internal pipelines, ensuring no residual water is left. Tip: Do not use compressed air on connectors labeled with yellow tags above or beside the water inlet and outlet to avoid damaging internal components.

3)Turn Off the Power: Always disconnect the industrial chiller from the power supply to prevent electrical issues during the downtime.

4)Clean and Store the Industrial Chiller: Clean and dry the chiller both inside and out. Once the cleaning is complete, reattach all panels and store the unit in a safe location that does not interfere with production. To protect the equipment from dust and moisture, cover it with a clean plastic sheet or similar material.

Why Is Draining Cooling Water Necessary for Long-Term Shutdown?

When industrial chillers remain idle for a prolonged period, draining the cooling water is crucial for several reasons:

1)Freezing Risk: If the ambient temperature drops below 0°C, the cooling water can freeze and expand, potentially damaging the pipelines.

2)Scale Formation: Stagnant water can lead to scale buildup inside the pipelines, reducing efficiency and shortening the chiller's lifespan.

3)Antifreeze Issues: Antifreeze left in the system during winter can become viscous, sticking to the pump seals and triggering alarms.

Draining the cooling water ensures the industrial chiller remains in optimal condition and avoids performance issues when restarted.

What If the Industrial Chiller Triggers a Flow Alarm After Restart?

When restarting a chiller after a long break, you might encounter a flow alarm. This is usually caused by air bubbles or minor ice blockages in the pipelines.

Solutions: Open the industrial chiller’s water inlet cap to release trapped air and allow smooth flow. If ice blockages are suspected, use a heat source (like a portable heater) to warm the equipment. Once the temperature rises, the alarm will reset automatically.

Ensure a Smooth Restart with Proper Shutdown Preparation

Taking the right precautions before shutting down an industrial chiller for an extended period prevents potential issues like freezing, scale buildup, or system alarms. With these simple steps, you can prolong the industrial chiller’s lifespan and ensure reliable performance when operations resume.
