Comparison between CO2 laser cutter and fiber laser cutter

During working, industrial machines tend to generate extra heat.Well,CO2 laser and fiber laser are no exceptions. To meet the specific cooling needs of these two kinds of lasers,S&A Teyu offers CW series water cooling system for CO2 laser and CWFL series water cooling system for fiber laser.

It is believed that laser cutting and laser welding will grow towards the trend of high power, large format, high efficiency and high intelligence. The most common laser cutters in the current market are CO2 laser cutter and fiber laser cutter. Today, we are going to make a comparison between these two.

First of all, as the traditional mainstream laser cutting technique, CO2 laser cutter can cut up to 20mm carbon steel, upto 10mm stainless steel, and up to 8mm aluminium alloy. As for fiber laser cutter, it has greater advantage of cutting up to 4mm thin metal sheet, but not thick one, considering the wavelength of it. The wavelength of CO2 laser is about 10.6um. This wavelength of CO2 laser makes it easy to absorb by non-metal materials, so CO2 laser cutter is very ideal for cutting non-materials like wood, acrylic, PP and plastics. As far as fiber laser is concerned its wavelength is only 1.06um, so it is hard to absorb by non-metal materials. When it comes to highly reflective metals like pure aluminum and silver, both of these laser cutters can not do about them.

Second, since the wavelength difference of fiber laser and CO2 laser is quite big, CO2 laser can not be transmitted by optic fiber while fiber laser can. This makes fiber laser very flexible in the curved surface, so fiber laser is increasing used in automobile industry. Together with the same flexible robotic system, fiber laser can help boost productivity, increase efficiency and lower maintenance cost..

Third, the photovoltaic conversion rate is different. The photovoltaic conversion rate of fiber laser is more than 25% while the one of CO2 laser is only 10%. With such a high photovoltaic conversion rate, fiber laser can help users reduce electricity cost. But as a novel laser technique, fiber laser is not as well-known as CO2 laser, so in quite a long period of time, CO2 laser will not be replaced by fiber laser.

Fourth, safety. According to the international safety standard, the danger of laser can be classified into 4 grades. CO2 laser belongs to the least dangerous grade while fiber laser belongs to the most dangerous grade, because its short wavelength will do great harm to human’s eyes. Because of this reason, fiber laser cutter requires an enclosed environment.
