To understand why R-22 refrigerant is no longer used in industrial chiller unit, let’s get to know what refrigerant is first. Refrigerant is a substance that is used in the refrigeration system and undergoes phase change between gas and liquid so that refrigeration purpose can be realized. It is the key element in industrial water chiller and other refrigeration units. Without a refrigerant, your chiller can not properly cool. And R-22 used to be the most commonly used refrigerant, but now it is forbidden to use. So what is the reason?
R-22 refrigerant, also known as HCFC-22, is one of the members of Freon family. It used to be the main refrigerant in domestic AC, central AC, industrial water chiller, food refrigeration equipment, commercial refrigeration unit and so on. However, R-22 was later found to be harmful to the environment, as it will deplete the ozone layer which protects us from the ultraviolet radiation of the sun and worsen the greenhouse effect. Therefore, it was soon banned for better protection for the environment.
So are there any other alternatives that won’t deplete the ozone layer and friendly to the environment? Well, there are. R-134a, R-407c, R-507, R-404A and R-410A are considered to be the most suitable substitute for the R-22 refrigerant. They are more efficient and even if there is refrigerant leak, users won’t have to consider they will result in global warming.
As a responsible industrial chiller manufacturer, we use nothing but environmental friendly refrigerants in our industrial chiller units -- R-134a, R-407c and R-410A. Different chiller models use different types and amount of the refrigerants in order to have the optimal refrigeration ability. Each of our chiller is tested under simulated load condition and conforms to the standard of CE, RoHS and REACH.
