May 24, 2023

In the mid-20th century, lasers emerged and were introduced to industrial production, leading to rapid advancements in laser processing technology. In 2023, the world entered the "Age of Laser," witnessing significant development in the global laser industry. One of the well-established techniques for modifying laser surfaces is laser hardening technology, which has extensive applications. Let's delve deeper into laser hardening technology:

Principles and Applications of Laser Hardening Technology

Laser surface hardening utilizes a high-energy laser beam as a heat source, irradiating the surface of a workpiece to rapidly increase its temperature beyond the phase transformation point, resulting in the formation of austenite. Subsequently, the workpiece undergoes rapid cooling to achieve a martensitic structure or other desired microstructures.

Due to the rapid heating and cooling of the workpiece, laser hardening achieves high hardness and ultrafine martensitic structures, thereby enhancing the surface hardness and wear resistance of the metal. Additionally, it induces compressive stresses on the surface, thus improving fatigue strength.

Advantages and Applications of Laser Hardening Technology

Laser hardening technology offers several advantages, including higher processing precision, minimal deformation, improved processing flexibility, ease of operation, and absence of noise and pollution. It finds wide-ranging applications in metallurgy, automotive, and machinery manufacturing, as well as the surface strengthening treatment of various components such as rails, gears, and parts. It is suitable for medium to high-carbon steels, cast iron, and other materials.

When the temperature during laser hardening becomes too high, the elevated surface hardening temperature increases the likelihood of workpiece deformation. To ensure both product yield and equipment stability, specialized water chillers need to be utilized.

TEYU fiber laser chiller is equipped with a dual-temperature control system, providing cooling for both the laser head (high temp) and the laser source (low temp). With efficient active cooling and a large cooling capacity, it guarantees thorough cooling of critical components in laser hardening equipment. Moreover, it incorporates multiple alarm functions to ensure the safe operation of laser hardening equipment and enhance production efficiency.
